of the Kickapoo Valley |
Jennifer Darner sees herself as a sort of village
potter, which helps to explain why she chose pottery over
other art forms.
Pottery isnt elite its an art form everyone can understand and appreciate, Jennifer said. People often stop noticing the things they use everyday because so many of them are mass produced.
With that in mind, she began creating functional, one-of-a-kind pottery pieces that add beauty to our everyday lives. A large selection of Jennifers pottery is available at Art Vision.
Before she began making pottery full time, Jennifer spent a year in La Farge working at Crooked River Crafts. There she learned the millefiori technique of beadmaking in which long ropes of colored clay are compressed into cylindrical canes and then stretched and sliced into beads. Jennifers time in the Kickapoo Valley is a major influence on her style, especially in the rich colors that are her signature.
When I lived in LaFarge, I spent a lot of time on the reserve land, and I really wanted to capture the colors that I saw there in my glazes, she said. As I work on my pots now, Im always reaching back to memories of sitting on a hill, absorbed in the green of the prairie, the blue of the sky reflected in the river, and the blend of the intense colors of the flowers. Just a few weeks ago, I looked at one of my pots and thought, I finally got it!
